NUAA was founded in 1952, making it one of the first aviation colleges established in the People's Republic of China. Over its more than 70 years of history, NUAA has evolved into a high-level research university with a primary focus on engineering, integrating science and engineering, and achieving coordinated development across various disciplines such as engineering, science, economics, management, and humanities, all embodying the unique characteristics of aerospace and civil aviation.
NUAA has established a "one university, four campuses, and one port" educational space layout, consisting of the Nanjing Minggugong Campus, Jiangjunlu Campus, Yangzijiang Campus, International Innovation Port, and Changzhou Tianmuhu Campus, all of which are developed in a coordinated manner. Currently, there are 3,810 faculty and staff members, including 2,410 full-time faculty members, and a total of 39,624 students (comprising 20,435 undergraduates, 18,366 graduate students, and 823 international degree students).
The university has established a high-level innovative talent training system. Currently, three disciplines—Aerospace Science and Technology, Mechanics, and Control Science and Engineering—have been selected for the national "Double First-Class" initiative. The university offers 67 undergraduate programs, 32 authorized first-level master's degree disciplines, 20 authorized first-level doctoral degree disciplines, four categories of doctoral professional degree programs, and 17 postdoctoral research stations, with a focus on cultivating individuals who show a sense of responsibility, an innovative spirit, and an international perspective, along with a humanistic outlook to become the pillars of society and engineering talents.
The university has become an important strategic scientific and technological force in the fields of aerospace and civil aviation. It has taken the lead in establishing six national-level research platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Mechanics and Control for Mechanical Structures and the National Key Laboratory of Helicopter Aeromechanics. It has achieved several historic firsts in China's aviation science and technology. Furthermore, it has been deeply involved in a series of major projects such as the C919 large passenger aircraft, manned spaceflight, the Chang'e lunar exploration program, and Mars exploration. Significant foundational theoretical achievements with international influence have emerged, including the "Wang Shicun Eddy Current Theory" and "Gao-Xin Vortex Ring Boundary," contributing significantly to the development of the aerospace and civil aviation industries.
