The Laboratory of Stage Design Factory at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) originated from the Lighting Laboratory established in 2005 and was upgraded and renamed the "Stage Design Factory" in 2012. It focuses on two core domains: experimental light-shadow new media and virtual simulation practice for film and television.
The laboratory operates under a four-in-one talent development model—"interdisciplinary integration, project practice, course-competition synergy, and industry-education collaboration"—and focuses on four main areas of research: stage lighting applications, immersive expression through new media, virtual simulation scene production, and digital media light-shadow technology.
It has built a three-tier foundational-technical-innovative platform and annually conducts over 20 experimental projects.
Over the past three years, the laboratory has helped students win 18 first-tier and 32 second-tier competition awards. It has developed five university-level elite courses and 16 innovative courses, created a specialized academic resource database, and established resource-sharing partnerships with three universities.
It annually delivers 13 courses totaling 632 teaching hours while developing 39 experimental projects, including nine innovative initiatives. Its self-developed virtual simulation platform comprises six modules, serving 600 users annually. Five industry-education projects have been implemented, with outcomes featured in provincial exhibitions.
The team consists of 17 full-time faculty members (53 percent holding senior titles) and three industry mentors, spanning disciplines such as theater, film, TV and digital media.
