A student from the College of Foreign Languages at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics has turned his passion for languages into an opportunity to serve on the global stage by volunteering at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan.
Zhang Junyao learned about the international volunteer recruitment for the Games while browsing the website of the International Olympic Committee. Without hesitation, he submitted his application, beginning a demanding selection process that involved online registration, an English-language interview and a series of online and in-person training sessions.
At the same time, he also applied to work at China House, a cultural and hospitality venue during the Games. After another round of strict screening and professional training, he secured both volunteer roles.
At the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, Zhang served as a guide for spectators arriving from around the world. Switching smoothly between Chinese, English and Italian, he helped visitors find entrances, check seating sections and resolve various questions.
At China House, Zhang took on the role of a cultural ambassador. Besides assisting with security and greeting guests, he also introduced visitors to Chinese culture. He also explained interactive activities such as floor curling and rowing machine experiences.
Zhang had already mapped out his next steps. He intends to continue strengthening his language skills by improving his English, as well as advancing in French and German. He is also studying management and finance to prepare for graduate school and his future career.
Outside the classroom, Zhang intends to stay active in sports and continue volunteering in sports and participating in Model United Nations activities.
