Robots, exoskeletons and a mecha-style vehicle offered an unforgettable welcome to freshmen at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics on Aug 29.

At NUAA's Jiangjunlu Campus, student- and faculty-designed machines took center stage. A humanoid robot impressed newcomers with live dance and martial arts demonstrations, while showcasing technologies with potential for industrial applications, including scanning and complex electronic assembly.

An exoskeleton designed to assist with heavy lifting and prolonged physical tasks demonstrated how robotics can augment human capabilities. Meanwhile, a robotic combat vehicle maneuvered around the venue and navigated obstacles. It also has shooting and automatic targeting capabilities.

The displays extended into the sky, with model aircraft and drones performing flips, spins and other aerial maneuvers over the sports field, giving new students an early taste of the aerospace innovation at the heart of NUAA.

The showcase was part of NUAA's two-day campus open day, which also saw several of the university's key facilities open to the public. National key laboratories and specialized labs offered visitors a closer look at cutting-edge research, while the university history museum, Yufeng Garden and the Aviation and Aerospace Museum were also open to visitors.
